A Message from 2025 LCA President Cecilie Loidolt

Dear Fellows:

I just attended the LCA's Complex Commercial Litigation Institute (CCLI) meeting at the beautiful Broadmoor. The CCLI is a practice institute of the LCA. Thank you to Mark Williams for hosting and to Meryl Macklin for leading us.

We talked about everything from what we’re reading, to AI in the legal arena.  I also had some great discussions with several members about inclusion of our younger lawyers and succession planning. When I think about diversity, equity, and inclusion, I find myself thinking about succession planning, and how the two go hand-in-hand.  I was asked what I am doing when it comes to succession planning. For my part, I bring young lawyers to trial with me, but I probably could do more to include young lawyers in attending depositions with me, and including them in preparation meetings. One of our members asked for action items he can take to be more inclusive. I so appreciate that people want to have the conversation.

We also discussed camaraderie among lawyers.  A number of us commented on how refreshing it is to be able to share experiences, weak moments, and mistakes, in an environment free of judgment when we’re attending LCA events. One of our colleagues told me that he shares his less than stellar moments with his associates.  Reflecting on this, it occurred to me that this is a fantastic combination of succession planning and the transparency we share with one another at LCA events.  It is so valuable for young lawyers to be included and to see that we are human, too.

What are you doing to promote the careers of young lawyers?

I hope to see you soon at the LCA Retreat in Santa Fe.

Sincerely,

Cecilie
